analysis on splitscreen: a love story

splitscreen: a love story.

http://vimeo.com/25451551

This clip is about the journey of two completely different people who go on a journey to find each other. this journey shows the two different backgrounds shared by the people and shows how different urbanisation is in some areas. Using this video clip i an analyse how the mise en scene, editing, sound, camera angles and movement help tell the story of these two characters.

Mise en scene:
At the beginning of the clip we see an instant contrast as the curtains are two completely different shades one is a white colour and the other curtains are a dark shade. this suggest immediately there will be difference's between the two clips throughout the entire video.on the left side of the split screen the landscape behind the curtain is bright and clear looking refreshing and open suggesting this person has a very relaxed and open life style as he lives in open spaces.the right side however is a view of the city with tall skyscrapers that block the sun. this suggests this person leads a very trapped suffocated lifestyle. because the sun is also blacked out on the right side this may suggest that their life is some what dull.the lighting in both these scenes are high key natural light so we have an indication of the morning and of the first day of their journey.Another contrast i noticed was between the tea and coffee. on the left side we see someone pouring milk into tea and tea is a symbol of etiqicy and this suggest that the left side is more classy compared to the right side who has a coffee. At the train station the left side is high key light and looks very neat however the right side is very dull and low key light only light with back lights making the station look quite scruffy and poor.also the costumes of the people on the platform suggest a different class and status between the two sides. on the left we see a sophisticated looking man wearing a suit this suggests he is of high class. the woman on the right however is wearing a very casual purples dress which may indicate she is from a poorer background in comparison to the gentleman on the left. when we see that they are both crossing a bridge the left side looks very open and has good perspective in the frame however on the right there are metal frames blocking the view this makes the frame look like a cage and that this person is trapped till withing this city.when they are on a plane the skies at first really contrast as the left side is stormy maybe suggesting that that person is leaving a bad background behind them or that the sky itself could be parallel to what the person is feeling towards leaving the city.the right side however is bright and this could suggest a new beginning for this person and as they say ''a light is at the end of the tunnel'' for this person.when they are in the sky in flight at oe point the skies look completely symmetrical this could suggest that they are both on the same Page of starting a new beginning and are on the same journey.e then get to establish where they are by seeing signs that connote to the city London for example big red buses union jack flags, and red post boxes. we then establish they are on the same bridge as the frames begin to match. as they meet we see that there characters look as though they are matched as they are both wearing black/greys this indicates a similar character and personality they are also both smiling which obviously indicates they are both happy to have finally met each other after their journey.

Editing.

Editing is a massive contribution to this video to make it works. The splitscreen means we can see the two different points of veiw from the two charicters and gives more depth to the video to create a story as we see the backgrounds of two completely different people. it also allows the audience to be able to see from the charicters persective of how they go about making their journey. Action matching is also used in this clips to keep the two clips linked and seem fluent throughout the video. One action match i like i when the cyclist rides through the two clips this follows the rule of thirds as the biker rides across the bottom of the frame and leads our eyes from one clip to the other making it a fluent move to watch both clips.the transistions throughout the video are just cuts but with the fluent actin matching it makes the video easier to follow and watch. The quick cuts may also suggest periods of time it takes to do things during the journey like read the news paper then get on a train.the credits are presented simply with an editing skill where both words come fomthe center of the split this immediatly suggests the split screean and also keeps it simple to read and easy to pay attention to.

Sound:

Throughout the whole video piano music is used. I think this is because piano music connotes love and romance as it produces a soft gentle almost romantic sound and for this reason is used in many love songs. piano music also creates a sweet and gentle atmospher and this is what people will also relate to love. At the beginning of the video the music is quite fast tempo which i think is parrallel to the busy streets and can suggest they have a hectic busy day.the soundtrack is non-diagetic but e do hear some diagetic sound to keep us linked to the reality of the situation and keep us engrosed in the story and their everyday life. we hear diagetic sounds of the train doors, escalators and the bicylce which i think is also a good way of getting people to focus on the bike from one frame to the next however i think this demonstrates sound perspetive as the bike was too far away to be heard that loud. As they are in the air the music turn quiet and more gentle to demonstrate the bliss of flying and that feeling of having no worries as this slow tempo almost silent music is contrapuntal to the busy day they lead below. I think the music also gives us a sense of embrace as the music is the main thing we can focus on in this scene other than the symetrical sky. When they meet each other and smile there is no music this empasises the moment and adds effect to the atmosphere of them meeting for the first time.

camera angles and movement.

al throught this video clip the camera is kept at roughly the same level this is so we get a feel for the persons hight and persepctive. Close ups are also used at the beginging of the clip to show how they are getting ready for the day and gives us aa feel of seeing the day through their eyes. close ups are used on the ,shower, egg, tea and newspaper this is because whilst doing these veryday tasks we are in gneral really close to these objects making the clip feel more ''human'' and realistic. tracking shots are also used throughout the video so we feel like we are on the public transport and are walking through the streets using this they make the audience feel more involved and attached to the story as they feel like they are on this journey with the two characters. a wide angle shot is used in the train station to establish the surroundings of the charicters.a dutch tilt is used when the characters are on the plane this is to suggest the take off of the plane.rolling shots are also used throughout the video to keep the story line feeling relaistic and make the audience feel like they are experiencing this journey with the charicters. a tilt shot is also used when the first meet so we feel that curiosity of founding out who they are as it slowly rises up from the map up from there body to both their faces. This builds up the excitement of meeting the charicters.
