Mise en scene

i am analysing this video from the beginning to 6:05

The room we see at first is low key lighting except for the dim light inside a tent suggesting this is a child's sleepover. The scenes in the tents are well lit and high key light. This is so we can see the facial expressions of the characters and also make it easier for the viewers to establish they are child characters. The girl character has ginger hair and a pink boy in her hair. Pink is the stereotypical girls colour and throughout the video clip this colour and this character stay closely linked. She also has a front tooth missing this is the typical image for a young child. The young boy has brown hair and black square glasses these glasses become a direct link to this character and make it easy for the audience to recognise him throughout the video. He also has a pot on his arm maybe suggesting he needs looking after and is a bit accident prone adding to his geeky personality. He is also wearing pj's suggesting they are in his home and that again it is some sort of sleepover. When the girl gets out the adventure book it is a big brown book with different coloured lettering. The different coloured lettering adds a child like feel as children like bright colours and it also brings a sense of happiness.  The girl is very dramatic whilst talking about her so called 'adventures' this creates a ruthless and exciting story telling atmosphere for the two kids. Humour is added to this clip when the girl says 'its like America only south' this is also an indication to their childish knowledge.  We keep getting reminders that they are of a young age as she even asks him to 'cross his heart'. This is a childish gesture often associated with children. We also see she is the dominant character as she orders him to make the promise. We recognise the two characters by previous aspects such as the ginger hair and the glasses. We also see he is wearing a tux which is instantly linked to formal occasions. As the frame widens we see the ginger haired girl stood by him in a bridal gown immediately suggesting they have gotten married which is later proved in next scenes.  She jumps onto him this body language shows she is more out going than he is and again shows she is the more dominant character out of the two. In the church the light is high giving the hint of a happy atmosphere. Her side of the family is all happy and excited showing they are a more outgoing yet his side of the family look less joy full stating he has had a more strict up bringing. They have no facial expressions and dressed rather dull maybe suggesting he has had a dull life and may explain why he seems less dominant and out going compared to his wife. We also see the wife dong DIY with the man maybe suggesting she See's them as equals and doesn't want to be a stereotypical couple. The house is painted the sames colours as her drawn up house i think this suggest the home is about her and he wants her to feel comfortable as its about her dreams meaning he puts her priorities before his and wants to keep her happy and make her dreams come true. The hill they go to picnic on is also high key light suggesting this is a place of happiness and good thoughts. When they are both laid on the picnic blankets they are both wearing the colour yellow also suggest they are both considered as equals. A further suggestion that they are equals is when she has a multicoloured parrot and he has all the balloons so there is a direct link of the colours. His char is also strong and short looking which matches the physique of the male character and the woman's chair matches that of a woman's figure suggesting that is her chair. The baby room they are painting is very high key lighting and has bright colour which is a complete contrast with the next scene of the baby clinic which is dull and low key light suggesting they have had bad news of maybe a miscarriage or that the female character is unable to have children. She is sat in the chair with her head in her hands which is a clear sign of devastation and he is stood behind her with his hands on her shoulders. This shows that he is going to be supportive of her and is stood behind her so he can keep her upright and standing. The hands on her shoulders also indicates comfort. When she is sat outside alone her head is held high indicating she is a proud woman and doesn't want to let the news get her down however her eyes are closed suggesting she is deep in thought. We then see the man give her the adventure book this is a little reminder of there past together we also see him making the 'cross my heart gesture' again acting as another reminder to the couples past. After seeing all his ties he also ends up with a bow tie which is a small reminder of their wedding keeping the viewer linked into the story and also creating an emotional connection. Low key lighting is used when they are dancing together suggesting a seductive and loving atmosphere. Back light candles are also used which connote romantic moods. The third time they visit the hill it is low key suggesting that something of a negative feel is going to happen and this is where she collapses. When he is at the funeral we can see it is the same church of the wedding because of the stained glass window this creates an immediate emotional connection with the viewers by creating little reminders and building up the storyline. His house is also low key and the colour looks like it is gone suggesting now she has gone there will be no happiness in that house because she was the colour in the mans life.

Editing

obviously as you can see this whole video clip is animated. Action matching is used when she points at him to make it seem more poignant and precise. A quick transition is used to the camera flash to catch the viewers attention immediately. The clouds also dissolve into different images so we as an audience can see what the character See's. The transition from the baby room to the clinic is a wipe i think this is so the clinic is slowly introduced to the audience and lets us as an audience take in the information the character is given so we feel like we are there also receiving the news. Quick shots are used when they are adding money to the jar to bring a sense of passing days as we watch the scenery change as well as each quick shot goes. A dissolve transition is used from the hill to the hospital again so we as viewers can slowly think about the possibilities of why she collapsed and let the devastation sink in. A dissolve transition is also used when he is at the funeral and when he goes home slow transitions are only used at the sad moments so they emphasise the drama. Action matching is also used as he turn round at the funeral and is then walking up to his house this makes the action fluent and reminds viewers he is now alone. Creating emotional devastation.

Sound

The dialogue taking place is all from the girl there is no dialogue from the boy. Like a child would she emphasises most of her words to add drama and tension like when she talks about 'riping out a library book' . We also hear the music quietly in the background suggesting there story together is beginning. We hear the diagetic sound of the pages of the book so we are hooked into the story still and not mainly focusing on the music. When the boy looks at the blimp the music gets significantly louder this signals the importance of the blimp. The only word the boy says is'wow' which represents his general feelings for this girl which is the fact that he is memorised by her. The balloon pop acts as a sound bridge and catches your attention to the beginning of their story together the camera flash also signals the start of the story. The music then becomes really loud and mostly consists of strings. The strings give a light happy mood. At the wedding her side of the family is screaming and this shows their happiness a gunshot is also heard suggesting there outrageous characteristics. When they reveal the brightly coloured house a harp is used in the score of music this adds a touch of magic and excitement to the reveal of her house. When they see the babies in the clouds piano music is used but playing the same tune this shows that it is still linked to the same characters by playing the same tune but touching a different subject in there lives. piano is also quite a playful instrument and is often used to represent the presence of babies and children.  A xylophone is also used as well as being an instrument its also a popular toddlers toy. The violin becomes more significant and slower as they are in the clinic suggesting the sorrow they feel and is parallel to the characters feelings. The piano is then also played really slowly as she sits in the garden to suggest some sort of pain. The strings help build the score of music back to a strong melody which may reflect her building back up her strength and recovering from her news. The music is also slow when they dance together suggesting a loving atmosphere. The music is also slow when she is in the hospital and becomes quiet suggesting her weak condition. After she has passed away the string are missing from the score of music which have been rather constant throughout the clip. missing the string missing Ellie this highlights her absence.

camera angles and movement

Over the shoulder shots are used whilst they are in the tent and the 180 degree rule is followed so we know they are clearly speaking to each other. Shot reverse shot structure is also used so it is clear they are in conversation. A slight tilt is used as they lay down so we feel we are getting comfortable with them to hear her story. A crane shot is also used so we can see inside her book again making us involved in the story and build an emotional connection to this book. A wide angles shot is used whilst they are in the tent so we as viewers can see how close and comfortable they are suggesting they are really close friends.  This is also a hint to their future. An extreme close up is used to the text 'paradise falls a land lost in time' this highlights the significance of this place. As she is outside his window we see parts of the tent in the frame making us feel like we are inside the tent peering out making us again as a viewer feel involved in the story. It also gives us a chance to see things from his perspective. A mid close up of him in his suits turns into a mid 2 close up as the camera zooms out we see her stood next to him. There is then an establishing shot to show us there at a church and getting married. As we see both sides of the families there is a slight high angle used so we feel like we are on stage with them seeing things from there perspective this is a great way to keep viewers interested and create an emotional connection by making them feel included. An establishing shot is then used of their house so we see there new home and we are being introduced to it. An establishing shot is also used of the hill to highlight its significance. A panning shot is used as they are laid on the picnic blanket this may represent the day passing by as they talk to each other. A vertical tilt and zoom is used as we enter the zoo to create a more dramtic enterance. A wide angle shot is used when they are both sat in the chair so we see that like in the previouse scenes they are still close and we see them holding hands which represents them being together.  A long shot is used when they are in the clincic to make us feel like we are in the waiting room as they are recieving the news. An over thwe shoulder shot is used as he looks outside at her to make us feel like we are also concerned for her and creates a protective connection. A close up is used on the jar as it is repeatedly smashed this may highlight the significance of it being smashed and can also connote to their dreams being shattered in the process. A big close up is used on all his ties as they change this signals the years passing by. We then stop on the bow tie which is a significant symbol in this short clip as he wore a bow tie when getting married. A big close up is then used on the plane tickets to highlight the importance of this event. A slow panning shot is used as a transition from scenes to the hospital. A wide angle shot is used as he is at the funeral and is going home to really indicate and show the fact that he is now alone and not close to his wie anymore now she has passed.
