The Avengers : Opening Titles and common patterns

Click the image below to view 'The Avengers' opening credits

The common patterns that i have noticed from watching spiderman and avengers opening titles is that the director is introduced to the audience twice. Once at the begining right after the production company. And then also right at the end of the titles. I think this is the highlight the significance of the director as it is an important role in the film making.

batman trailer analysis

I have chosen to look into this film which is Batman the dark knight as it follows the genre we have chosen to look at as a group which is action. Batman was first produced by DC comics and was first introduced to the public in the comics in May 1939. Since then he has become one of the most successful and popular DC comic character. This film is part of a trilogy which was co-written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film was distributed by the warner bros. which is a popular film company and probably help lead the films to their success. The budget which was spent on the film came to around $185 million and it made at box office around $1,004,558,444.Based on 286 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a 94% approval rating from critics, with an average score of 8.5/10.

Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer is a German film composer and music producer. He has composed music for over 100 films, including award winning film scores for The Lion King (1994), Crimson Tide (1995), Gladiator (2000), The Last Samurai (2003), The Dark Knight (2008) and Inception (2010). He did the music score and has also worked on games scores such as call of duty which is an army game. I think this shows he knows how to create an atmosphere which gets an audience truly interested and involved with the game or plot of the film and this ability helps with the success of the film.

This is my analysis on the film trailer as i think they use iconic ways to represent characters and create an atmosphere by using Mise en scene, editing, sound, camera angles and movement.

Mise en scene:

The first scene we see is very low key light and it is obvious it is set outside as first as we see the building. We then also see the very low lit streets also stating this scene is outside and in a popular city. when the producers names come up we see them backed by blue fire this makes them look modern and helps make them stand out. Blue is an iconic modern colour and gives the new release a recent feel. We then see a city scape and people in suits this is just showing you the setting of a very popular busy city where there are a lot of people. We then see some characters in suits showing they have some importance in the city and possibly in the plot of the film. We then see a short scene of a car crashing through a wall this immediately highlights drama and action. It then cuts to a meeting going on where we see the back of the joker. I think is so we can focus on his voice and realise and recognise him for his voice and it helps build up curiosity for the audience as they wait to see what he looks like. in the meeting the lighting is high key light and this connotes to a safe place and they may be having this meeting in a place of authority and law and something to do with the police.

When we first see the joker has has on a purple suit purple connotes royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition, as well as wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, and dignity suggesting the joker thinks he is smarter and higher above everyone else and is striving for individuality.  In the high key light the wrinkles on his face are also highlighted making his facial features more presented and defined. Around his eyes he has black this makes him look very dark and evil. The green hair makes him look immediately different along with the smudged red around his mouth which looks almost like blood. He has a smile of death. We then see a crowd running suggesting something big has happened and is scaring them away this creates curiosity and tension. We then also see a scene where a building explodes this clearly makes the action clear and the genre of this film clear. We also see the joker hold up a playing card with the joker on it as he suggests this is his card. This implies he has a sinister humour and likes to be funny and see things as a joker. He also claims its 'his' card and is therefore stating that he is the ultimate joker. We then see another city scape which is highlighting the importance of this city and stating that it is clearly relevant to the plot and is probably linked to the joker. We are then in a restaurant and the warm back lights help create the warm and cosy atmosphere within the place.
We then see a scene with batman on a motorbike which are built for speed and this makes the scene look dramatic quick and full of action as they are also dangerous vehicles. We are then shown more explosions which show us the intensity of this film and the destruction that takes place within the plot itself. We then see a woman character talking to Bruce outside on their own showing that those two are quite personal and their is some significance between them both. This also signifies that there could be a possible damsel in distress. We then also see batman land on a car smashing it in a crouched down position. This makes him look very powerful and strong as a character and as a hero but is also shows he is quite mysterious about what he does and prefers to be closed off as he hides his identity. We then see the joker shooting up the roof trying to stir up the crowd and make his presence clear we also see the people run in wearing clown masks. This indicates he has followers as a clown is a step down from a joker as a joker is seen to be more complexed and tend to be more famous for mind games and this makes him more sinister , creative and more feared. We again see a scene of a car explosion this could indicate his target is not the public but a single person. when he is about to confront the female character we see him slick his hair back with the hand he has the knife in. This reminds us as an audience that he is dangerous armed and that this could be hinting to a next scene. It also may show that he is proud to be who he is as he doesn't hide the knife from her making him seem confident and quite superior.
We then see the joker watching a fire burn this shows he has no fear of the element and is quite confronting to the fire and its dangers. it also makes him look very dark and cruel as the fire kills away the building. We also see the joker throw a knife from one hand to the other treating it as some toy and this again makes him look very confronting as he toys with the weapon it also makes him look very strong and bold. We see the joker shooting a gun and then the lorry flips this is clearly showing that the joker is the one causing the chaos and making things go wrong. we also see a scene were the very iconic symbolic batman light is smashed and this indicates that he has found his match and that he his being challenged by the joker himself as the people cant signal for his help. We then see a male character who has already been introduced shouting this indicates he has an important role in the plot and he is involved with some dramatic incident. We see batman flying over the city this shows he is watching over the city in general.

Editing:

In the first 3 scenes we see they fade out. This means as an audience we are being slowly introduced to the trailer and being built up slowly. This also adds dramatic effect to the scene itself. The names and logos of the producers fade in so we are slowly introduced to each of them so we can see them clearly also the blue fire behind them highlight there significance.we then see four quick cuts used which goes from a city scape to the police to then two male characters (separately) this highlights there significance in the plot and also shows they have some relevance and importance in the plot and the film in general. A scene of a meeting fades out to a scene of a car crashing through a wall which also acts as a cut away shot from the meeting and this could indicate what is going on whilst the meeting is taking place or could be some sort of flash back and this is why they are having the meeting. Two quick cuts are then used as the character Bruce looks up and then we see a black frame this highlights his significance and also could relate him as a character to the car crash and the meeting. The black frame helps us concentrate on the sound as it is important and helps us as an audience listen harder and pulls us in. The meting scene then fades back in this highlights its importance as we are revisiting the scene.
A cut away shot is then used as Bruce is introduced to characters in the film but also to us as an audience so we know who he is and who is character is in the film. A cut way is also used to see batman on a motorbike this adds a clear link to the two characters. The female character fades in and out quite often making her look quite vague and weak almost as she doesn't look as bold of a character than Bruce and this highlights the possibilities of her being a damsel in distress later on in the film. When the male character asks if there are any ''ex's'' he should worry about a cut away shot is used to batman landing on a car smashing it this looked quite bold, strong and is done in quite a confident and slightly aggressive manor adding slight humour to the trailer and also indicates he is an ex boyfriend. A black scene is used as the joker speaks again so we are again paying more attention to what he is saying and to the plot in general.
Two quick shots are used as the joker is walking up to the female character to him being really close to her. This makes his confidence clear and also shows he has an immediate interest in her. We then see Bruce fade out holding the batman mask to a meeting this could be showing that he is becoming a public need but he isn't strong enough for them. Four quick shots are then used from an explosion to the joker to Bruce to the batman costume. This way we can see how the explosion links to do joker making him the ultimate culprit and then from Bruce to the batman costume making it obvious he is the batman and that all these situations are all linked as batman has to face the joker because of the explosions and chaos he is causing. We then see the joker sat in a cell and when he claps his hands a quick cut is used and this shows his confidence as it is almost as though he signalled the transition which also gives him a sense of power as a character. Scenes then become shorter and transitions faster until an iconic, ironic important saying is said so we are built up for this moment. The titles then slowly fade in giving them dramatic effect and importance as we are introduced to the film title. A cut away shot is then used to the Lamborghini this also adds humour to the trailer.

Sound:

At first we hear a loud bang which immediately draws us in as it catches our attention. The bang is then repeated again this could symbolise this importance of the upcoming events. Beating then comes in building the music up and making the music sound more bold and thick. We then hear another loud bang before the man jumps off the building the music then builds up louder. We can then hear a voice speaking however we do not yet have a face to put the voice to so this increases curiosity within the viewers and makes us intrigued to see who is talking. We also hear the diagetic sound of the camera flashes and this keeps us related to the real world and makes the whole plot in itself seem more realistic and reminds us this is supposed to be a real and possible situation. The jokers voice and the constant score of music acts as a sound bridge throughout the whole of the trailer keeping all the scenes linked and making the trailer feel fluent as it plays.
The music then changes pitch as it becomes a higher key and this again grabs our attention as we notice this change and this help build up and create tension. The music then stops and all we hear is the joker say ''Kill the batman'' this highlights the importance and relevance of this saying and makes it clear there will be a distinct battle between good and evil the joker being the bad guy or villain. We then hear a stereotypical evil laugh which sounds very sinister and mocking as people run and we hear the diagetic sound of people screaming this clearly indicates that the joker is evil and is causing chaos and disaster. We also hear the diagetic sound of the explosions this makes them seem more real as we hear and see them happening. We then hear the violins come into the score of music this adds an immediate dramatic effect and helps make the score of music sound more full and intense with there sharp sounds. We then also hear the fast pace beating and this is helping build up the tension also we hear the loud pounding of the drums this is all making the score of music sound heavy and very obvious as it is helping build up the atmosphere. The score of music is also a low tone and this adds a sinister and very confronting effect as it sounds powerful and strong. We still hear the diagetic sounds of the explosions keeping us linked with the reality and severity of the situation. Trumpets are then introduced into the score of music. Trumpets were used to signal importance and also to signal the start of a war and this is what i get from this i feel like they are announcing the war is about to start between good and evil.
We also still hear the fast beat keeping the tension high and gets adrenaline pumping as the music prepares us for the drama that is about to happen. The music then stops as we hear a character say ''you have no idea''. We then hear the joker introduce himself by saying ''good evening ladies and gentlemen'' this is stating that he is very powerful and the people have underestimated villains and he is going to be different and more eccentric. As the joker shoots his gun this is a trigger for the music to come flooding back. Again giving the joker control and a strong sense of power almost a though he is manipulating and controlling the trailer. The violins start to pick up and become louder we hear the diagetic sound of people screaming. Through quick cuts we hear the loud beats again that were used in the beginning this again sounds abrupt and grabs our attention keeping us completly focused on the plot. Sound perspective is demonstrated when the joker flicks his knife as the noise sounds really loud. I think this is because it is an easily recognisable sound and this connotes pain, death and this again makes the genre of the film clear.
The joker signals the music to come again when he literally says the word ''Go''. He is signalling the chaos and starts all of the drama. we then hear the diagetic sound of the Gun shots and this again connotes pain and death making the genre really clear and also acts as a shout out as we are being pulled in to see what he is doing and what he is shooting at. The violin starts to build up again and is joined with fast percussion and this again is adding tension and helps create the dramatic atmosphere. We hear the constant beat and the clash of the violins as they strike together this makes the music sound strong and powerful and is parallel to the joker as he is confident and a powerful villain. The music is then silent so we can hear the significant saying from the male character as he states '' die a hero or live long enough to see our self become a villain''. The music then goes from high to low pitch again bringing back that sinister feel to the trailer and build us up with the constant drum of music. Slow dramatic wind instruments are then introduced to the score of music adding drama and power this adds emphasis on the titles and makes them more important as they music finally slows and this makes the title stand out.

Camera angles and movement:

The first scene uses a panning shot around the building and also acts as an establishing shot as we see the city. A high angle shot is then used so we see the man on the roof this also acts as an establishing shot and is also a panning shot as it moves around the character on the roof highlighting his significance. A high angle shot is then used again as he jumps of the building empathising the height of the building and making his jump seem more dramatic. A tracking shot is then used this is also a crane shot as it is going over a building this also acts as an establishing shot as we are being introduced to the city and the surroundings. A vertical tilt is then used of the crows so we see the mass of people. A mid-close up is used on the two different male characters this is so we can get a general idea of their job and appearance and personality. However this doesn't really make them important however more important to the plot as the crowd of people so far. A close up is then used on Bruce so his character is made clear and and allows us to really focus on him and recognise him as a character so we see all his details from his appearance. A deep shot is then used as the jokers back is faced to us and we see the meeting take place in front of him this makes us feel involved and helps build curiosity of what the character looks like. We are then for the first time shown the joker an this is done with a close up so we can clearly see his face. Because of his unnatural odd look as well this makes the close up seem quite confronting and intimidating.
A wide angle shot is then used so we see the crowd of people and and a slight vertical tilt is used as the run away i think this is to reflect the impact of what has just happened and we are being 'blown away'. An establishing shot is then used again as a crane shot as we see the building explode so we can see the whole impact and this makes the explosion look huge. Then the joker is caught with a mid-close up so we see his body. Another tracking establishing shot is used over the city this is to clearly show the city's importance in the plot and make the viewers aware of the setting. A wide shot is then used so we see the setting of the restaurant. The 180 degree rule is then followed as the characters talk this is to make it seem more realistic and make is clear to the audience who is talking at what time. An over the shoulder shot is used and the female character and Bruce talk this makes us feel more involved with conversation and also gives a very personal feel to there conversation making them seem very close and linked to each other which is parallel to the conversation they are having about a past relationship. When batman lands of the car this is a wide angle shot to make the impact clear and is also took at a slightly low angle making him look powerful and high so superior in a way. A deep shot is used as the joker shoots his gun and we see the character duck behind him this way we can see what effect he is having on the characters.
A rolling shot is used as the joker talks this adds the feel of panic to the scene and makes us feel involved as an audience and present. A panning shot is used as he is really close to the female character this makes this invasion of personal space more significant and also highlights the fact that every one from every angle is watching them. A zoom is used to batman on the edge of the building this also acts as an establishing shot again as he looks over the city. A long shot then goes to a close up of Bruce holding the mask this is also took at a slight high angle as though we are peeking over his shoulder again making us feel present as an audience. A low angle is used as the joker pulls out his knife this gives him a powerful presence. A close up is used as the batman light is smashed this adds clear significance to this action and reflects batman falling to pieces. Close ups are used on Bruce and the male character as he says his saying. This makes the saying ironic and also shows that it is secretly aimed at batman and therefor also Bruce.

Overall i think in the trailer the genre of this movie is made very clear with the scenes and the techniques they have used and i think they have demonstrated the jokers power clearly. I also like how they focused on the villain more than batman himself making us wonder what will happen in his film as stereotypically good always wins evil but this trailer has us questioning this typical story line with the scenes they have included in the trailer. I also think they have also represented there characters very well and made the good vs evil structure very obvious.

Megamind trailer analysis

I have chosen to analyse this short film clip as it is relevant to my groups ideas on what to do for our own film opening. The ideas we have had so far is portraying the villain as much as the superhero and being able to show the story from both characters. This film is all about the viliains point of view and that is made clear by the use of mise en scene, editing, sound and camera angles and movement.

Mise en scene:

At first we see the blue baby and this immediately looks 'alien' and different this makes it clear that he is not human and he is different. However people are often scared of different and can have trouble accepting people who look different and this ties into the plot well.He is also wearing a blue baby grow and this signifies that this could be his iconic colour throughout the film and we will immediately link the blue to him. The sign that says destruction is also in the colour blue and could be hinting the the characters later purpose in the film. We are also introduced to another quite insignificant character his pet green fish creature. This shows he may have some human characteristics as he has a pet. We also see he has a child's dummy also further suggesting he has human characteristics and possibly human feelings. We are then introduced to the other character who looks more human with his normal skin colour and hair. We also see he has a white and gold suit in a gold pod this could suggest he is the ''golden child'' and is more preferred by the public. We see him hitting the blue pod and this suggest some sort of rivalry and cruelty from the other baby and that he is not actually very nice. We also see him blow a raspberry which is a childish gesture for children who feel smug when they think they are in the right and are winning at something in this case he feel proud of himself for smashing his pod and is being portrayed as a bully almost. Also in his pod there is high key light and in the aliens pod it is more dark and this shows the classic contrast of good and evil.We see that megamind wears a black spiky outfit which connotes dark evil and aggressive behaviour. However we see him spinning on a chair which makes him seem quite harmless and innocent as this is a childish gesture. There is high key lighting used for when metroman is outside with his crowd as they cheer for him however the skies go low key as megamind comes closer and this indicates his ''evil'' presence. The lightning bolts are also blue reminded us as an audience of his iconic colours. We then see him dancing and smiling and this is not the stereotypical behaviour of a villain suggesting to us as an audience that he is different and he is a countertype. We see a woman kiss metromans feet so the people of the city literally kiss his feet as they worship him and this makes it clear that he is the favourite character among the people of the film. We also see at the end when the spider is blown at him he is scared this again suggests he has fears and has human characteristics as he shares a really common fear that many people have making him seem more human and this makes it easy to relate to this character and prefer him. This also makes him seem quite harmless again as he too has fears and is supposed to be really evil.

Editing:

The production company which is dreamworks fades out. the scenes are generally cuts as it is a trailer and they wants to make this film seem action packed and fit alot of the films main scenes into the trailer to draw viewers in. Action match is used as he is put into the pod to make the action look more smooth and realistic to the viewers and it allows us to see the movement from two perspectives. The sun fades to white and this fills the whole frame and acts as a transition as when it fades out again there is a different scene. The titles are also edited to look metallic and have a tint of blue. This makes them look modern and bold and the blue also acts as a symbol for the film and reminds us of the character. This is clearly suggesting he is the main character. quick shots are used so we see all his leather this adds slight humour to the video and humour is a great way to bond to someone and this makes the3 character more likable. Action matching is also used as the spider is blown into his eye so we see the two perspectives and this makes the action more fluent. Also the obvious editing is that this is an animated movie.

Sound:

Throughout the clip we hear megaminds inner monologue this again helps us as an audience bond with him as he is talking directly to us telling us the story from his perspective. At first we hear the soft piano playing this connotes to a relaxing atmosphere and yet we are interrupted really suddenly by screaming immediately catching out attention. This screaming is diagetic and creates drama to the situation and heps us stay linked to the plot. We then hear a choir and violin music score and this adds dramatic effect to the scene. sound effects are used so we hear the baby alien hit the window and gives us a feel of the impact. The baby then blows the raspberry which is diagetic sound. We then the music pick up pace with percussion and drums and this builds up tension and is classic action music as we hear it building up. We then hear metro man say ''you cant trap justice'' indicating that he is the hero in this film. We then hear the diagetic sound of the leather and this adds slight humour to the characters personalty. We then hear the soundtrack of guitars and drums and this has an upbeat kind of feel and this gives a positive feel to the trailer instead of being so sinister. The iconic evil laugh. This instantly and immediately reminds us that he is supposed to be portrayed as the villain. We then hear a non-diagetic guitar solo and at this moment we also see megamind dancing the guitar solo is the main part of the band and is a main instrument and this connotes to megamind being the main character and the centre of attention. The credits also have sound effects to highlight their significance.

Camera angles and movement:

At first a close up is used on the baby and this immediately highlights that he is different in appearance. A rolling shot is also used however to make us aware of the panic and the situation that is happening in this scene. A low angle shot is used as he looks up at his parents this allows us to see them from his perspective and helps us create an emotional connection with him s a character. We also see a wide angle shot used so we can see the whole of the universe and the new character enter the plot.A zoom is used to the metroman baby to make him seem significant and highlight that he is a main character. As the metroman flies a rolling shot is used to make us feel involved as an audience and is also an establishing shot so we can see the setting of the city. A panning shot is used as he flies into megaminds 'trap' emphasisng the fact that he is supposed to be confined and trapped. Close ups are then used on both characters so we can see how they contrast in appearence immediately and allows us to compare the two. A big close up is used on megaminds forhead and butt this adds humour to this character and highlights his odd appearence. The camera then zooms out to add dramatic effect and it introduces him as a character and his machines slowly and creates a sinister feel. But straight after we see the tracking shot of him playing on the chair which instantly dilutes the evil built up in the previous scene. A deep shot is used as we see metroman and the crowd behind him which suggests he has the punlics support in general. A crane shot is used as the female character falls adding dramitic effect and perspective as we see the town beneath her. OTS is used as she blows the spider to make it look more engaging as she has the conversation and makes us feel present in this scene. A close up is also used as she blows the spider to make this action significant and important.

Danny elfman music

Danny Elfman is known to create dark sinister and powerful music scores and he has been used to compose music for some comic action films. I think this is because he can really create tension in an atmosphere and works well with creating powerful music that sounds right and helps create the moment in the film. I think he can also create the impact of the tension and fear with his music. Here are some examples so you can here for yourselves.

joker costume and make up

Joker is a famous evil villain and i think his popularity is mainly because of his unusual sinister appearance which makes him very memorable to viewers as a character. First of all we see in this image and in most images of the joker he is in low key light. This suggests his dark presence and his sinister personality immediately. The low key light also makes his wrinkles obvious and makes his facial features stand out more as they shadow and become more significant. Firstly he has green curly hair. This is already abnormal and different and suggests that something isn't right with him as a character. The colour green in Egypt symbolises regeneration and rebirth and this may suggest that as 'the joker' he is being reborn into this evil character. His face is also painted white. White connotes purity and peace however he has almost poisoned the white with the other colours of black and red which connote negativity. His eyes are all black. Black suggests darkness in general and evil. The eyes are a key way of communicating and expressing emotions and so if he has surrounded his eyes with black he may be suggesting his emotions are black. He doesn't have any emotions ad if he does he is hiding them away. The make up is quite smeared as well which makes him look crazy and messed up even more as it spreads round his face. The fact that its smeared also makes his eyes look misshapen again suggesting there is something not right about him as a person. He has a big red line across his face as well. This looks like a very sinister smile and links to his name 'The Joker' again this is smeared and looks a bit like blood connoting evil and unnatural feelings. We also see how the make up goes into two points in his facial creases. This looks slightly like teeth suggesting some sort of brutal animal manor of being quite rough and insensitive maybe as a predator. It may also suggest he is some sort of monster with his big sharp teeth blackened eyes and blood on his face.

superman costume

In the film super man the hero has two identities. One as Clark Kent and the other as the hero superman. We see these identities as two different charcters because of how they are reprisented even though they are both played by the same actor. When the actor is playing the role of Clark Kent he looks very neat, simple and well normal with the exceptions of his geeky personality and iconic glasses. He is wearing a white shirt with a beige sleeveless jumper on. These are very dull colours and doesnt make him as a person or character noticeable. The white could impply his pure side as he is a hero. The brown is a neutral colour maybe suggesting he is down to earth and wants to get on well with the people in a peaceful enviroment. The glasses try to suggest he does has imperfections as a normal person and this also makes him seem more normal. They look like the stereotypical nerd glasses suggesting he has a timid geeky personaltiy as Clark Kent. On the image to the left he has his hair parting on the left side and his hair is done all neat with a slight fringe. Nothing abnormal and again looking fairly normal. So all together as Clark Kent he is reprisented as a normal average human with a slightly geeky appearence. Now as super man we see him looking bolder, stronger and more different so he stands out as a hero. First of all he has his hair parting on the right side showing an immediate change in personality and character as this is a different hairstyle. He also has a bit of a curl from his hair showing a bit of quirkyness and even self confidence as he is taking more pride in his appearence. This singled out curl could even reprisent how he is different from the rest as the curl could represent him being away from everyone else. We also see a glimpse of his red cape and blue costume. The colour red connotes to danger and warnings yet blue connotes to peace and tranquility and these two together suggest his feelings as a character. He doesnt wear his glasses anymore suggesting some sort of perfection as we cant really see anything wrong with him suggesting his normality. His eyes actually look more highlighted and bold ans this draws veiwers in to make eye contact with him. As clark Kent the lighting is quite low key in comparison to supermans image this again suggests difference in personality as superman appears to be more bold. The high key lighting also highlights his face and makes it clear he has no imperfections.

iron man poster analysis

In this poster we see one side which is just the iron man costume. The other side includes other characters in a smaller image size. This suggests that it is iron man who is the main character and more important than the others and the one we all want to see. It also makes it clear that he is More powerful than the other characters as he over rules them. The lighting in the poster is very low key suggesting a very dramatic traumatic atmosphere. How ever there is the use of high key light on iron mans heart and eyes suggesting that he is pure and good as he shines bright from the heart. His eyes being in high key suggest truth as the eyes is a main express point for human as we show what we feel. Again the positioning of the other characters make a diagonal line to the titles this directly leads our eyes to the title and yet we have to look through the whole image before we are lead/attracted to the title. We also see the images of planes and explosions definitely suggesting some type of fight and war and that is what planes and explosions connote to this attracts viewers and suggests the film genre. Tony stark (Robert downey Jr. - iron man) is the first character we see besides iron man suggesting that he is the next most important it also suggests that he an iron man are fairly equal as they are the same height opposite each other but iron man is still more powerful. Even though tony stark is iron man in this poster iron man is presented as a completely different character suggesting that when tony stark is playing his role of iron man he becomes a different person who is more powerful and maybe more true of heart. The titles are presented in a gold metallic colour so we see that they are related to iron man as iron mans iconic colours are red and gold and he is made of metal. I think the colour gold also suggest that this is going to be a hit film because gold is often linked with treasure so they may be suggesting that this film is the best and is going to be classed as a public treasure maybe. With the titles being in the middle at the bottom i think this makes them look more confronting and suggests the confrontational intimidating feel.

spider man poster analysis

In this poster we establish that he is high up as we see the city in the background. This shows that he is higher than everyone else and suggests he has a greater power/ social status. We also see the use of pathetic fallacy to create an atmosphere of drama and tension suggesting this is what will be included in the film. We also see a mixture of high key lighting and low key lighting suggesting some sort of contrast between good and evil and may even suggest a battle as we see the storm. In one side of the image we see spider man wearing his iconic costume with its recognisable and signature colours making it clear that he is a main focus of this poster and film. In the other side of the image we see a spider man character but wearing black. We recognise the character but not the colours is this a hint at his true colours? a darker side to spider man? something he has hidden from the viewers. This makes the audience ask questions of the significance of the different coloured costume and intrigues an audience. Black often connotes to bad atmospheres and negative energy's and therefore also suggests some sort of drama and fight as we see the immediate contrast between the dark evil black to the bright red and blue colours. The fact that they have also presented this other character In a reflection gives us a hint to whether it really is spider man whether than just a different character. The position he is in he is creeping round the corner of a building. This body language connotes to a secretive mode and delicate situation suggesting that he is caught up in trouble and has to be careful where he goes or who sees him. The have also used a slight dutch tilt in their camera angle so the line of the building passes right through the poster on a diagonal axes this leads our eyes straight through the image its self so we looks at all of the image and it also leads us to the number 3 in the right hand corner. I think they have followed the rule of thirds by placing the three in the bottom right hand corner as it looks as though itself is hiding from the viewers eye which makes us more attracted to it. The way spider man has his arm positioned as well almost looks as though he is reaching out for the number along with the reflection making it seem significant and this also catches our attention.

The impossible

I went to watch this film with my family yesterday. I can honestly say i never stopped crying all the way through. It really tugged at your heart strings as nothing was held back we all saw the reality of the situation and nothing was hidden from us as an audience and we where all confronted with this horrible traumatic event and we saw every element of how it affected the family and what was happening to them. We see how a family who have been ripped apart learn how to stay strong through injury and try to get each other through the incident. After watching the film i then asked my family what scene they remember and why. The scene that every one of my family remembered most was when they are in a tree waiting for help a little boy named Daniel that they rescued starts to stroke the mothers head and stroke her arm comforting her. I think this scene was memorable because of the role reversal. It is not something we would ever expect to see during such a horrific event because stereotypically the mother would comfort the child who is probably scared as they are not old enough to understand. However in this scene we see the little boy comforting the mother this is a countertype and is not a known scene that the audience is presented with and has a massive effect on the audience. I also liked a scene where the wave first hit because instead of having loads of quick cuts and shots of her struggling and making us focus on her as a character they presented the characters feelings differently. When we see the wave first hit and a close up of the character the screen then just went black. It was black for a matter of seconds which is quite a long period of time which really drew in the audience from curiosity as we don't know what happened to the character or where she is or if the wave has already happened now. But after the black scene we start to hear the diagetic sound of the water and we see slight brown colours enter the frame and then we see the surrounding water and the camera bobs up and down out of the water which reflects the character drowning and being swallowed up by the water and trying to get to the surface to breathe. I though this was a brilliant way to make the audience feel connected and a part of the traumatic incident and this creates a real emotional connection and makes the storyline all of a sudden quite personal to the viewer. Me myself was holding my breathe as i was watching it although at first i didn't realise i was doing it it just felt like a natural reaction as they had stimulated the feeling of drowning using the scenes they did and the camera movement.

codes and coventions of marvel action films.

In marvel films we can see iconic and recognisable layouts, angles used and atmosphere. In Marvel films they all have a good guy/guys and a bad guys/guys. they story line always end up that these two forces wi9ll clash and some sort of war or fight will take place that is full of action and will use traditional fight scenes and adapt them. For example in the avengers we see that iron man treats himself as some sort of distraction/decoy to distract the alien race so he can help destroy them. Also included in the plot will be some sort of disagreement between the good characters to show the tension and the stress that they are taking out on each other or in some cases take out on themselves. In marvel action films rolling shots and Crane shots are most likely used to give the audience that sense of movement and being involved with the action and making the scenes look dramatic and busy. Iconic scenes could be used which trigger some sort of memory to create more of a connection with audience for example when hulk catches iron man from falling and scrapes down the building it reminded me of that king Kong sort of feel as the hulk - this big ugly monster who is misunderstood, saves iron man who in this scene acts as a damsel in distress. Of course! Cant forget that. Action films will nearly always have a damsel in distress it makes the movie interesting by giving the good guys something to fight for and adds another symbolic iconic character to the film. For example in spider man on more than one occasion does he have to save Mary Jane from some evil villain/ plot. I think that low key lighting is often used to firstly introduce the evil character to make it directly clear that they are the bad guy and gives us a real sense and definition of good/evil. The good guys normally have a scene where they will be filmed from a low angle to make them look high and mighty and very powerful 'good conquers evil' sort of feel that they are the ultimate. I like marvel action films because there audience are anything from children to adults and its something everyone can watch. They make this possible by having some sort of modern props and fancy language used that maybe younger kids don't understand however the general storyline is always recognisable and easy to understand as a general action film. I think that quick transitions are also often used in action films as other transition may be too slow for the supposedly panicky and energetic atmosphere they are trying to create. Marvel never do anything by half. They always put everything into there films to give it the wow factor and give it that power and that is why they are extremely popular with the public.

Action is one of the genres i would like to go into and base my film opening on as i think we could experiment more with the camera creating tense and action packed movements and angles and also create a creative plot.

Avengers assemble (Released April 11th 2012)

The avengers is a superhero film that was produced by marvel studios. This film will be in the category of action/comic and i would much like to base an analysis on this short trailer. Firstly though a little information about the film :

Marvel studios:

Marvel studios is an American television and motion picture studio based in Manhattan Beach California. The Studio is part of Marvel Entertainment which is partly owned by The Walt Disney Company. Being a part of the Disney company means Marvel Studios works together with The Walt Disney Studios. Marvel was first founded in 1993 and was known as marvel films until 1996 when they changed to marvel studios.
The Avengers was directed by Joss Whedon. The Avengers premiered on April 11th 2012 at Hollywood in El Capitan Theatre. The film received positive reviews from most film critics and set or tied numerous box office records including the biggest opening weekend in North America and the fastest film to gross $1 billion. The Avengers grossed $1.51 billion worldwide and became the third highest grossing film of all time. Clearly this film was very successful and many people enjoyed the experience of watching it.
A statement from the director states that he clearly enjoyed making the film and understood the plot and the general meaning and moral of this story:
"It goes back to the very first incarnation of The Avengers, it goes to The Ultimates, it goes to everything about it. It makes no sense, it's ridiculous. There's a thunder god, there's a green "id" giant rage monster, there's Captain America from the 40s, there's Tony Stark who definitely doesn't get along with anybody. Ultimately these people don't belong together and the whole movie is about finding yourself from community. And finding that you not only belong together but you need each other, very much. Obviously this will be expressed through punching but it will be the heart of the film."
The film is about unity between 6 very different super hero's who are needed to save the earth despite their differences.
The music was composed by Alan Silvestri. He has composed music for other box office hits such as forest gump, cast away, and back to the future trilogy. Clearly he has an experienced field of composing music and can create different pieces for different genres which contribute to the success of the film. I think the music through out the film the avengers is very well put together and always creates the right mood and helps us create a deep connection and emotional relationship with the film as music is a big element in film production.
This is my analysis on the trailer for The avengers assemble:
Mise en scene:
At first we see the sky scrapers and the yellow cars. We can instantly connote these scenes to large cities especially American cities as they are known for their yellow taxis as London is for their big red buses. We also however see fires and this brings a sense of chaos to the scene. The cars are scattered and abandoned and in such a popular city we instantly know that this is abnormal and something is wrong. We also then see two short scenes of people running away again indicating something is wrong and is happening. We then see some scenes where there are explosions this clearly indicates some sort of attack or destruction is happening. We then see a man with an eye patch on. Half of his main facial features which help him express feelings is gone. This could be signs of him as a character and that maybe later on in the film he hides things or has trouble expressing certain things. We then see the army vehicles and soldiers clearly suggesting some sort of war and that this is a very serious incident that is happening. We then see more guns and explosions making it completely clear that this is an action film packed full of explosions. Whilst captain America is in the gym the lighting is quite high key and the colours are nude such as light browns. This could suggest that he has a steady natural down to earth character. This contrasts to the low key lit hut we see in the next scene where the hulk is. This suggests that there is something more sinister about this character in comparison to the previous one. We also see a short scene of him ripping his shirt as he is turning.  The colour of the shirt is purple and purple is one of the hulks iconic colours. We then see the hut surrounded by men in black this suggests some sort of possible attack as they close in on the hulk who is in the hut. We then see the character Thor who has a red cloak and breast plates. This can indicate that he is a fighter as the colour red connotes danger and breast plates are used to shield against weapons in war. High key lighting is then shown as he summons the lightning bolt lightning is a common fear which is shared by many people and he is able to control it suggesting great power over many people and that he is even of a greater status than other people. We see two iconic characters shaking hands this brings a sense of equality between the different characters even though as we have been shown they are all different with different powers. We see a scene of a sign that says 'stark' so this is a hint that this sign is significant to the plot. We then see his red and yellow coloured Armour which is iron mans iconic colours. Red again connotes to danger however the yellow connotes to gold and suggest he has a richer background and is of value to the team. We then see the two reds fighting this shows that they are clashing and struggling to get along. But a sense of equality is brought back again when we see Thor, iron man and captain America stood in a circle. We also see that they all have red on their costumes showing they are all linked and related and shows common background. We also see a scene were a whole crowd kneels this could suggest the human race giving up and submitting to the higher power. We then see scenes of hulk screaming, explosions and Thor screaming this makes everything seem so dramatic and adds curiosity for the viewers. We then in the last scene see them all stood together in a circle which suggests unity and strength as they fight together.

Editing:

As this film is based upon fictional characters with super powers and such alot of computer editing has been used to make the characters really come to life by using computer generated imagery. Slow motion is used in the scenes where the people are running away to give the audience time to see them all running and time to question what is happening it also adds dramatic effect as panic is slowed down we see every part of it. We also see alot of explosions and it is likely some of them were also computer generated. Transitions are quick cuts to keep the trailer looking action packed busy and keeps the viewer wanting more. However the transitions are quicker when the hulk is transforming this adds tension and panic to the scenes. Slow motion is also used as the two characters share a hand shake this emphasises the action and creates significance. The titles we see are also very modern looking as they look shiny and metallic suggesting modern technology. When Thor hits captain America's shield the scene is in slow motion this is to highlight the impact of the hit and make it seem more powerful. Transition then become fast again leading up to the longest shot of the trailer where iron man is fighting off alien invaders. A slight use of action matching has been used when iron man falls to make this action more fluent. Little action matching has been used as this would make the trailer seem too slow and less thriller and exciting.

Sound:

Straight away we hear the start of the big powerful score of music. We hear the low key wind instruments making a very sinister evil sounding blow. This adds tension immediately and is parallel to the trauma and drama that is taking place throughout the trailer. We hear the slow motion screams as we see them running this creates more of a dramatic effect as we hear them scream for longer there fear is made apparent. We then hear another blow of the wind instruments as we hear a character say ' A war has started' this adds power and intensity to the phrase. This phrase is non-diagetic to the people who are running and screaming. We then hear 3 blows of music i think these are recreating the explosions that we see. We then hear the fast pace drums as the marvel logo appears. Violin then also creeps in this adds more depth to the piece of music and adds sorrow to the piece of music and drama. We hear the lightning strike as Thor summons it up this acts as a sound motif for this character. When we see the stork sign we see another explosion of music highlighting the significance of the sign and the character. The music then fades out as we hear a character say ' we need a time out'. This suggest exhaustion between the fighters.  The music then comes back much more stronger and louder with the wind, drums and violin all working together to give a more powerful dramatic atmosphere. The ace is also faster and there is a constant beat of drums which could reflect heartbeats racing and the tension rises and things get more powerful. The constant bang of drums could also represent the different punches that are thrown through out this war and all the different hits they  have to take it. A choir is then introduced into the score of music to add dramatic effect and build up the music. Violins pitch keeps getting higher and higher and music becomes louder building up the atmosphere. The music then stops so we can just hear the diagetic sound of the explosions and shooting this change of sound will catch viewers attention. We then hear the last explosion of music as they are all stood together this is a powerful image and a powerful scene as them together are powerful.

Camera angles and movement:

The first scene is shot using a crane shot and is also an establishing shot of the city a panning shot is also used so we feel like we a circling the scene in a helicopter and feel involved with the plot and that we are already siding with the good side as police use helicopters to view crimes from over head and track people down easily. A tilt shot is used as people run so we see a decent amount of the crowd running and we get an idea of how many people this is effecting. A wide angle shot is also used as they run so we get an idea of the depth of the crowd. We see an explosion and a characters facial expressions with two perspectives they have done this by using the reflection of a window. A wide angle shot is used when captain America is in the gym this is so we see the power of his punch as the bag flies across the room. The rule of thirds is also followed as he is on the left of the frame this makes it clear that he is the main focus point in the frame. A close up is used as the hulk peers over his shoulder however we struggle to see his face because of the mass muscle on his shoulder this close up highlights this and makes him look more well built and full of muscle as he practically fills the whole frame with just his shoulder. A crane shot is used over the hut so we see all the gun men surrounding the hut and this highlights the hulks danger. A low angle shot is used as Thor holds up his hammer this makes him look powerful and strong. A low angle is used again as iron man walks out of his suit this is hiding his identity at first and building it up to reveal who he really is as a character. A wide angle shot is used as we see them stood all together in a circle so we can make a judgement of how close they are allowing each other to be to each other. A rolling shot is used as Thor lands on a plane this is to make the scene feel more realistic and gives the audience a short glimpse into Thor's perspective. A low angle is used as Thor smashes him hammer into captain amercia's shield this is so we can see the impact up close and this draws us in and we become interested in the consequences of the clash. A high angle shot is used on the crowd as they kneel so we see the sea of people as they fill the whole frame. We see another high angle shot as a character goes to shoot an arrow up as if he is aiming at the camera. He is shooting at the audience he is attacking them making us as an audience and you as a viewer feel personally involved in the attack as he is shooting for your attention. The last scene is a panning shot as each character is a mid close up up again this presents them all as equal and united ready to fight.
